BRANDING | Lucy's Fried Chicken

Media_httpwwwpentagra_dgbgm

In the age of low-cal low-carb fare, it looks like fried chicken is alive and well in Austin, Texas!

Pentagram recently posted a spread about the brand they've developed for Lucy's Fried Chicken and it's a fun mix of vintage style and contemporary design. I love the simple script logo and the accompanying monogram (in the shape of an egg, of course). The color scheme, too, is just vibrant enough to be fun and casual.

SIGNAGE | In Cardboard

Media_httpwwwatissuej_bajbs

Who would have imagined that die-cut cardboard could be such a wonderful material to use for interior signage? Not I.

Thankfully, designers Isidro Ferrer, Pablo Alabau, and studio Zaragoza Versus were innovative enough to develop this signage system for the Spanish Pavillion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

It's a brilliant idea, if you ask me. Particularly, for short-term, temporary spaces where material waste and expense are things to be avoided, wherever possible. Along these lines, as the article at the link points out, the use of cardboard also has its merits for tradeshow applications: it's lightweight, recyclable, and inexpensive.

I wonder if this idea - or something similar - will catch on...

One sure sign of a thoughtfully design interior space is the creativity devoted to the signage package. The fun and playfully apropos imagery incorporated into the interior signage of The New York Times Building, in N.Y.C. is the final touch on a wonderful space.

RE-BRAND | Little Chef Restaurant in the U.K.

Media_httpwwwundercon_lpymg

The rebrand of this UK restaurant chain is a nice is a refreshing update that maintains the character of the original. The chef icon has been simplified, and the friendly script used for the new wordmark is appealing in its playfulness.

In addition to these changes, however, I'm particularly fond of the new "to-go" packaging and labels; as well as the colorful trays and signage that integrate the look of the rebrand throughout the restaurant.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN | Maya Lin & Pentagram - Museum of Chinese in America

Media_httpwwwpentagra_syidg

See the link for some beautiful photographs of New York's Museum of Chinese in America. The architecture, by Maya Lin (designer of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC) is both rustic and refined, and the environmental graphics throughout the space compliment the aesthetic nicely.

Taken together, the architecture and graphic elements are in perfect harmony - clearly, the result of a thoughtful collaboration between the practices of architecture and graphic identity.

INTEGRATION | Environmental Graphics at Grey Group

Media_httppentagramcomengrey3drr620jpg_jsalcgehaipeldu

Pentagram and Studios Architecture work together to create a seamless and, at times, quirky partnership between architectural and graphic design for Grey Group, a marketing firm in NYC. The variety of materials used to express the brand make for a unique office environment with surprises around every corner.

Nicely done.
