ILLUSTRATION | Amtrak Signals It Now Has Wi-Fi

Media_httpwwwatissuej_raddq

A quick post:

Amtrak trains are now Wi-Fi enabled and the company released some great ads highlighting this new feature. The illustrations are crisp and modern; and the universal Wi-Fi symbol was nicely integrated into each scene. Nice job.

ILLUSTRATION | Colorful Animals by Ty Wilkins

Media_httpvintagemeoh_lljps

To put it simply: these are fantastic illustrations. Fun, colorful, and contemporary. I'm tempted to write a children's book about each one. "Spencer was more than just your typical well-heeled rooster..."

LOGO | England's National Maritime Museum Goes 3D

Media_httpwwwundercon_etxjr

Typically, logo designers working with Regular Businesses design with practical considerations in mind: "What does this look like in one color?", "Does it fax well?", "Can it be executed consistently across all media?", etc.

In an interesting (and well-executed) switch, the designers of the new logo for the National Maritime Museum thought outside of the logo box and created a very appropriate and beautiful 3-dimensional "splash" identity that is a pleasure to see in all its different uses (click the link to see images). As a bonus, the hidden imagery in the rendering makes the mark all the more fun to take in (do you see the 'crown' representing the Queen?).

While this is not necessarily the most practical of designs, I look forward to seeing how the identity is used over time...and whether it inspires more experimentation with the definition of a "logo."

IDENTITY | Pronto Restaurants (Moscow)

Media_httplovelystati_glgji

The simple illustrations featured on this set of cards for an Italian eatery (Pronto) in Moscow are pleasantly executed and, presumably, let the food do the talking.

Though Pronto is a chain of restaurants, the stationary gives a sense that there is an old-school chef carefully preparing each and every dish.

BRANDING | Bone Daddy's Identity Package

Media_httpwwwundercon_schdv

Perhaps I've been watching a few too many episodes of America's Next Great Restaurant (which is as much about creating a strong brand as developing the menu), but this identity package caught my eye.

It's colorful, fun, and unique enough to make you wonder what the food tastes like. As a bonus, the playful illustrations and bold graphics manage to communicate the in-your-face flavor one expects from a really good BBQ joint.

PUBLICATION GRAPHICS | First Things

Media_httpwwwpentagra_lqijc

There is something to be said for restraint in design. Pentragram's re-design of the periodical, First Things, is eye-catching for its bold use of color; but the imperfect illustrations featured on each cover are equally engaging.

Further, the attention to detail is evident in the elegant curves of the "R" and "N" of the publication title, and the structured layout of interior pages (click the link above for images).

I would imagine that seeing these covers on the shelves in 2010 made more than a few passersby stop and have a look.

ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS | Rudi de Wet Studio

Media_httpc0573862cdn_evpvy

The hand-painted graphics in this space are absolutely great. It's fun, whimsical, and I love the restrained (but very bold) use of black and white. This is definitely one of the most creative interior spaces I've seen in some time. Engaging, but not overwhelming. Perfectly integrated.
