DESIGN | A Look at the History of Airline Livery

Media_httpgraphics8ny_ddwng

I came across this New York Times post comparing the evolution of airplane design and found it to be an interesting overview. Many of these I had never seen, so I thought it would be worth sharing.

Also, I must note that I miss the polished metal look of yesteryear. There's just something about the classic look of the metal planes that made air travel seem more special and elegant. Something to experience, rather than endure.

QUOTE | Book Cover Artist Mendelsund On Design

I came across the following quote on Jacket Mechanical and thought I would share:
...a good design, whatever its intended use, is an aggregation of many small decisions - each one as important as the next. The resulting design is no more or less than the sum of these decisions. Each choice, no matter how seemingly insignificant, matters.

I've come to realize that many people seem to subscribe to the view that there is such a thing as "a design" which exists in the abstract - platonically; independent of its component parts. This belief in turn gives rise to the misapprehension that changing a design (a bigger font here, a different color there, a change in layout) does not, in fact, make for a different design altogether. "We're keeping the design," I'm told, "but we want some changes." Such a thing isn't possible. These details are the design.

PUBLICATION GRAPHICS | First Things

Media_httpwwwpentagra_lqijc

There is something to be said for restraint in design. Pentragram's re-design of the periodical, First Things, is eye-catching for its bold use of color; but the imperfect illustrations featured on each cover are equally engaging.

Further, the attention to detail is evident in the elegant curves of the "R" and "N" of the publication title, and the structured layout of interior pages (click the link above for images).

I would imagine that seeing these covers on the shelves in 2010 made more than a few passersby stop and have a look.

BOOK COVERS | Penguin Classics and Nabokov

Media_httppentagramco_gukij

Penguin Classics continues to shine. Surely, there must be other publishers who put similar emphasis on the design of their book covers...right? Hm. If you know of any, please share.

In the meantime, have a look at these (created by Pentagram).

BOOK COVERS | Penguin Classics team up with (RED)

Media_httpwwwcreative_jnwmc

Penguin Classics offers some of the most well-designed book covers out there. Admittedly, I've purchased the Penguin version of my favorite novels over other options, just for the sake of beautifying my bookshelf.

Now, Penguin teams up with (RED), the AIDS awareness fund, to create a limited-run of themed covers and the results are exquisite. Eight titles in all receive the signature (RED) treatment, and each cover is unique in the use of graphic elements and typography.

It appears it's time to make more room on the shelves...

BOOK COVER DESIGN | Alex Camlin of Da Capo Press

Media_httpfriendfiles_vddhy

Quick Post: Book Cover Design Alex Camlin of Da Capo Press chats about his experience, his inspiration, and his work... An excerpt from The Casual Optimist

:

I really enjoy working on books that are a bit off-beat or quirky. Recently, I’ve worked covers for a Karaoke memoir, a history of jetpacks, and a fake autobiography of Steve Jobs. I find that the books with moderate-to-low sales expectations (usually due to their niche subject matter) are the best to work on. Very few people bother to deconstruct what I’ve done, and the off-beat content usually leads to some interesting visuals.

BOOK DESIGN | Penguin Books Designer Interview

Media_httpfriendfiles_dbdhh

A quick post about book design:  What a challenge to have to catch a consumer's eye with the spine of a book on a shelf or a small cover...

The intro from an interview with Coralie Bickford-Smith of Penguin Books (UK) at Design Related:

Coralie is an award winning book cover designer and has created several acclaimed series designs forPenguin Books. Art director Jim Stoddart first spotted her latent talent six years ago in the page layouts for a supermarket pet club magazine. At which point Coralie breathed a huge sigh of relief, as on the whole she prefers designing book covers. Recently she has been working on projects with students at London College of Communication, passing on the principle that underpins her own work: 'stop designing, start playing'.
